Hershey, Pennsylvania

Hershey, PA

When you hear the name "Hershey," it's difficult to picture anything but the delicious bars of sweet chocolatey goodness that you've been enjoying since childhood. There is a place right outside the capital of Pennsylvania that is home to little more than 14,000 people who enjoy life amongst the candy-themed street names and Hershey Kiss-shaped streetlights. Interestingly enough, Hershey is not considered a city but a Census Designated Place, or CDP. It is located in Derry Township, which is in Dauphin County. This CDP, however, was rated as the best place to live in the county by Niche.

Residents of Hershey and the surrounding areas love their sports, and they have a professional team playing right at home. Whether you catch a game or watch the team practice on its days off, there's bound to be some fast-paced action to enjoy from the stands. The Bears, who call the Giant Center their home, have been competing in the American Hockey League since the 1938-39 season, are the longest-running club team to still be operating in its original city. Gordie Howe, known as "Mr. Hockey," was once quoted as having said, "Anybody who is anybody in hockey has played in Hershey." The club has two members in the Hockey Hall of Fame and has also won 11 Calder Cups, the most of any AHL team. It has been serving as the main development affiliate for the Washington Capitals since the 2005-06 season.

Originally a company town created by Milton S. Hershey, there are now several properties owned by the resorts and entertainment division of the company that attracts both residents and tourists alike. Hershey's Chocolate World is a factory store and virtual tour ride of The Hershey Company, while Hershey Park is the perfect destination for thrill-seekers, with multiple options for food, and rides ranging from slow and soft to fast and thrilling, even looping rollercoasters. For those seeking a peaceful day around nature, Hershey Gardens is a botanical garden and arboretum covering 23 acres of land, which was created as a gift by Mr. Hershey in 1937 to the community and to honor his late wife, Catherine.

In yet another example of Hershey's philanthropy, Milton created Zoo America in 1910, which is still going strong and is an extremely popular destination in Hershey. With over 75 species and 200 animals, you could spend days watching them interact in habitats that imitate the ecosystems they are originally from.
